A-Z Challenge! L Day

So. There's this little thing called LOVE, and people like to write about it. Even more, people like to read about it.

I'm TERRIBLE at romance. Even writing kissing scenes makes me blush, and I'm not a romantic person at all. I'd rather watch Avengers than When Harry Met Sally, and I'm much better at battle scenes that falling-in-love scenes. I've read all kinds of blog posts about it, but I still struggle.

Does anyone else have this same problem? Anyone have tips or tricks?

  1. I'm a feature writer, so romance is also not my cup of tea. Sorry, don't have any tips. I just write about other things and not bother about romance. Too many other things to write about.

    1. This is true, and if it isn't something you enjoy, there's no point in writing about it!

  2. Just write it out and go back to fix it later. I'd rather not write this stuff at all, but my readers all seem to expect it.

  3. I don't know if what I write is technically romance but there's love and adventure and that's my favorite combination.

  6. New follower here. *Waves* Ah romance. For me its pretty easy. I think. But I'm a romantic person, so I can roll it out through personal experience. I think some could use their own personal fantasies to go on. But if neither of those things work, I'd say leave it up to your characters. In the end, you don't have to be romantic, but are they? And are you allowing them to have that kind of personality. I'd say try throwing back the reins and let your characters play it out. If it makes you squirm, try to think of it as them doing those things and not you. Maybe that will make it easier, and help you feel less restricted. Hope this helps.

    1. Hi! Thank you for following! I am sooo not a romantic person. And my problem is, all my characters are pretty anti-romance, also. But I might be holding too tightly to the reins. I never just let them go -- I should totally try that!

  7. I'm not great at romance. I'm trying to learn. I write YA and I've been annoyed by the way the romance plays out in many of the books I've read. I try to write it in away that is different from all the things that annoy me. In my current book the boy and the girl are in an intense situation and they find they work well together. This builds into a friendship which will hopefully build into "something more." I like romance to be subtle and woven into the main story. It is more natural for me to write it that way.

I'm nominating you for a Liebster award :) I have been really enjoying your blog. (if you are busy I understand. These awards seem to take a lot of time.)http://simplysarahsblog.blogspot.com/2013/04/blog-award.html

    1. I am the same way! I like subtle romance, but I don't love the whole story to be about romance. And still, I struggle. And thank you for the Liebster award! I will try to get a post up this week!

  8. i found it took several glasses of wine and a lot of typing, deleting and retyping of the "naughty" words to write my first smut scene. since then, the romance part of the books have gotten a lot easier. but i still enjoy my wine while writing. (write sloshed--edit sober is my mantra.)
